Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Over the weekend, the student took practice 9 and got a 34! He thinks it is a fluke but I think he is getting better with his test-taking skills. This is a lot of improvement. He got a 9 on physics, 11 on verbal reasoning and 14 on biological sciences. Today we covered mainly organic chemistry. We looked at orbital hybridization and the resulting molecular geometry, types of isomers, absolute configuration and nucleophilic substitution reactions. We also talked about free radicals, which I need to clarify more next time. From now on we will focus most on physical sciences for tutoring."
"The student has seen his score improve considerably between his first diagnostic a few weeks ago and his most recent full-length practice test. He has used the review methods I sent him as well. I encouraged him to map the passages so he can focus on the arguments in the passages, and how the paragraphs relate to one another and the passage topic as a whole. We saw this in some of the complicated Physical Sciences passages. In Verbal Reasoning, he did very well in passages on natural sciences but had trouble with abstract concepts. Examples of passage mapping helped him with his understanding here too. I advised him to make flash cards and practice more of chemistry."
"The student and I reviewed another practice exam, focusing on the questions in the physical sciences section that she answered incorrectly. We also came upon some concepts in physiology that we covered briefly, and will study in more depth on Saturday. This includes the RAAS system, nephron structure, and endocrine principles."
"The student and I met and continued our work in both Physics and Chemistry. She had done a practice test, so we went over many of the problems she had trouble with. We also spent a considerable amount of time on Redox and magnetism."
"We went over her practice test. She received a 27, with a breakdown of 10,7,10. She has been stable at around 27-28. We talked about some topics as well as some test taking strategies. No concerns. She has her exam on Friday."
"We went over questions from the last practice MCAT she took in the physical science section, as well as going over questions on Lewis dot structures, resonance, stereoisomerism and chirality in the book. Overall, I thought that she did very well on most of the questions that we went over and the vast majority of her incorrect answers were on easily rectifiable mistakes. Her confidence since first starting our sessions has skyrocketed and her performance has greatly improved. While she still needs to work on some physical science concepts, like isomerism, electrochemistry, and Lewis structures, her general ability in the PS section is excellent."
