Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed the rest of the student's math packet, including having him graph and describe many examples of piece wise functions, GIFs, absolute value functions, and general lines. I had him go through the basic definitions of a function and explain how to add/subtract/multiply/divide various functions. We reviewed domains of dividing functions. He seemed to improve greatly in his ability to graph piece wise functions once I explained the method differently. I think he will do well on his test tomorrow."
"The student and I went over slope - how to calculate it, what it means, and its applications in real life scenarios. I did not have any questions to leave the student for practice, but we did do some together and it seemed that he was understanding it by the time our session had ended. No concerns as of yet."
"We focused extensively on graphs and derivatives. We plotted derivatives from original functions and discussed continuity, differentiability, and smoothness. Applications of derivations including inc/dec,extrema, inflection points, concavity, and physics (position, velocity, speed, acceleration). We will continue looking at applications of differential calc in our next session."
"He has a Chapter 1 test this week, so we spent the session doing the review section in his book, and he will be given extra credit if he finishes the problems and turns them in."
"Went over regression. The student already had a handle on the topic, but needed some help making linear transformations to power functions. I gave him a quick lesson using the rules of logarithms and he had no trouble after."
"During this session I prepared my client for his upcoming test. I went over the same materials that I covered in the previous session and explained them in detail. Overall it was a good session, and at the end I could tell that my client was ready for his test."
"We reviewed secant and tangent lines inscribed in a circle for a quiz the student is having on Wednesday, and worked on more complex unit conversions for chemistry. He is happy with our review and feel comfortable with what he knows for the quiz."
"The student and I did some more practice with PEMDAS problems, and also worked on some word problems asking him to describe the story with an equation and then solve the equation. He seemed comfortable with the order of operations material. He and I went over the material he needs to study for next week's physics test. We also looked over some of his geometry homework. He seemed good on geometry."
"The student and I had a great session! He has a test coming up on Tuesday, so we spent our time reviewing his material for the exam. We talked about graphing, derivatives, limits, and how the three are inter-related. We also reviewed limit rules and derivative rules. I think he's in a pretty good position at this point for the test. Good luck!"
"Finished going over chapter 3 which focused on derivatives of polynomials and trigonometric functions. Also went over product rule and quotient rule. Gave the student a 10 question mini test from the back of the book to assess his understanding. He did very well; he only missed a 1 or 2 due to forgetting trig identities, but his calculus is very strong."
"We continued to cover the graphing of lines and continued to practice factoring polynomials. He is getting increasingly good at both, and we are working towards real word applications of these functions. He was not struggling, but still having to work very hard to get the answers. It would take him a solid amount of time, but then he would always work out the right answer in the end. I left him with some additional graphing problems and practice."
"We practiced transformations, vertex vs quadratic form, graphing. The students understanding of transformations is definitely improving as is her understanding of the vertex form. The student actually has a bit of trouble graphing a function, which can add difficulty to the current concepts. Perhaps it would be helpful to graph each problem after completing it and identify different features. For our next meeting, I'd like to do all word problems as these are challenging and will quite possibly be on the exam."
