Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I began our session by going over a verbal practice test. He did fairly well on analyzing the passages. From there, I had the student do a writing section, in which he selected the underlined word that was used improperly in the sentence given. He did fairly well on these, but still missed some. We went back through the answers to these to ensure he understood his errors, and then we continued to work on some further writing examples. Next, we finished the 101 math questions he is likely to see on the test, and he did quite well with these. After going through the math questions, we turned to practice vocabulary tests. I feel as if math is his strength right now, and vocabulary and some grammar rules are his weakness. We will continue to work on strategies to improve in these areas. I gave the student a vocabulary practice website for extra practice and left him with a math resource as well. I am still very confident in his ability to do well when he takes the SAT on May 8."
"The student still feels a little less comfortable with math than with the other sections of the SAT, so we began by focusing heavily on certain math problem types. I had asked her to do some exponent-based questions on the SAT prep website last week, and she said she felt better with them than before. We also looked at triangles and sequences. We worked through some sample questions together, discussing skills for working efficiently as we went. After we finished with these, we looked at a practice math section together. The student is getting much more confident, but she does occasionally get confused by geometry questions. We talked about how to use the included formulas to guide the answer process, and I asked her to practice her math skills over the next week. After we finished doing some math questions, we moved on to the writing section, specifically focusing on the multiple choice questions. She has a great sense for how the English language sounds; she got many of the questions correct with little effort, which is a great sign. She should not be very concerned about this section! To conclude the session, we reviewed some vocab words she had struggled with in our previous session and discussed strategies for remembering their definitions. The student is doing well with vocab, and I encouraged her to use the strategies we discussed to cement her understanding in upcoming weeks."
"We reviewed about 60 of the most common SAT words. The student is working on learning all 500 from the list. We also did a math section."
