"She's finished the book we were reading. Worked on sentence timing and structure as to how it can vary meaning. Some work on parts of speech and how that can be used to infer meaning from context."
"It seems the weekend did the student some good, as we made good progress today with reading comprehension. His reading speed is also beginning to pick up."
"We started off with a timed reading of "The Fourth Grade Fuss." The student read 160 WPM and made 5 errors, resulting in a score of 155 WPM. For this reading her errors were caused by insertions, or additions of words, into the text. She also stumbled over a proper noun-'Woodbury.' Afterwards, we discussed that while her additions of new words are a sign that she is working to make the text make sense, they can also lead to misunderstanding of the text later. When she went back to the word, she was able to pull it apart and sound it out successfully. We discussed how she could take an extra second during a timed assessment to use her decoding skills to get the correct pronunciation. We read "Small Solution, Big Change" together. I modeled the introduction aloud, and then we took turns reading the subsequent paragraphs. After reading, we discussed the article and she was able to ask questions, draw images to clarify her understanding, and make text-to-self connections to the article. We then moved on to a cause and effect graphic organizer and she was able to complete the organizer by going back to the text to support her answers. We also completed a problem/solution graphic organizer based on the article, and the student showed that she understood the concept and knew where to find support from the text."
