Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Reviewed the two SAT Critical Reading sections assigned to the student for independent practice. Both were within a point of each other in raw score, and he expressed that reading the passage first had felt more natural, so we decided to adopt this as his approach. Sentence Completion continues to be a strong suit for him - his native vocabulary is clearly large enough that attention to word roots and context can approximate most higher-tier words accurately. He has all the comprehension skills necessary to do well on this section. Assigned some combined vocabulary-building and reading practice for independent completion."
"I had the student take a practice assessment. We also worked on more critical reading practice. Overall the student is progressing at a great rate and I have no major concerns!"
"This was my first session with the student. After getting to know each other briefly, we dove into his PSAT prep book. We started with critical reading because he told me math is more of his strong suit, and in our limited time before his test next Wednesday, we decided to focus on what needs the most work. His biggest struggle is certainly the time and mental discipline necessary to study efficiently for his test. We worked through several sentence completion/vocabulary questions, and after discussing the logic and context clues surrounding each problem were able to determine or "best guess" the proper answer. Again, with the student's limited time to study, our time was best used discussing logic, the process of eliminating answers, and the jeopardy of guesses. We did a similar process for sample critical reading passages from his book, with the student thinking through his answer choices out loud and us discussing the possible merits of each option. All in all, though, I think the session went very well and I look forward to working through some writing strategies with the student on Sunday."
