Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I had the first writing session with the student today. We covered and practiced some fundamental skills such as developing an idea, making an effective sentence topic, and adding relevant details. We also reviewed some punctuation rules."
"Worked with Student 1 and his little sister. Worked with him on writing a 5 paragraph essay and crafting a thesis statement. Worked on times tables with Student 2. Student 1's homework was math area/perimeter problems."
"The student let me know a long time ago that he has difficulty completing essays for timed tests in history class. Since he doesn't have any essays due for his English class at the moment, we worked on writing timed essays and connected that to the same planning process we've been using for English class -- writing a thesis, choosing supporting statements for the body paragraphs, and then choosing evidence that works for each body paragraph. Since he is learning about the Athenians versus the Trojans in his history class, we spent some time discussing what he has learned, comparing and contrasting the two cultures. We also did some research to learn a little more about both of them. After that I gave him a prompt, asking him which society he would prefer to be a part of, and I required him to follow through with the entire process of writing his essay within a time limit - planning first, writing, and then rereading and editing. He seemed to jump immediately into the writing, and as a result his essay lacked detail and organization. I made him go back and create an outline and then edit his essay afterwards using the outline. From that he was able to eliminate whole sentences that didn't support his argument, and also give more detail to his central idea. With the remaining time, I had him work on one more prompt."
