Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We worked on generating ideas and writing a first draft for an essay on Homer's "The Odyssey." I provided tips for starting an essay and time management."
"We picked up where we left off last week with the student's children's book assignment. She only had to create a cover and intro page for a children's story, not the story itself. She did so, and submitted it. She was able to complete English poetry lesson 23 as well. It contained a metaphor, a simile, personification, onomatopoeia and alliteration. Great job! We will pick up on Friday."
"During this tutoring lesson, we continued to review chapters 9-12 in "Lord of the Flies." The student is having a test on this material on Friday. We reviewed some specific themes that are in the novel. For example, we discussed these themes (from the teacher's study guide sheet): the end of innocence; the defects or flaws of society that come from the defects of human nature (people); and we discussed this specific theme and how it applies to the novel: the breakdown of socialized behavior and society. In addition to reviewing the themes stated above, we discussed the ways in which irony is used in the novel. Lastly, we ended the tutoring session by reviewing the 15 vocabulary words that are going to be on the exam. Some of the vocabulary words that are going to be on the test include: gesticulate, officious, recriminate, inscrutable, tacit, and unintelligible. The student made flashcards, with the vocabulary word on one side and the definition of the word on the other side of the card. Using repetition and memory by association, we verbally went over the 15 vocabulary words that he will be tested on. He is a diligent student. He is always very attentive during our tutoring lessons. Thus, our session was very productive."
