Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over "Lord of the Flies" and helped to create an outline. The student came prepared with a rough thesis/idea to start off with and we branched out from there. We went over some basic plot points to use as parts of the essay, how it shows the author's intent, etc. A lot of quotes were extracted from the novel in order to create the essay."
"The student has a research paper for Social Studies that he just got assigned. He will complete the paper in stages, with due dates about once a week. We discussed a few ideas he had a for a topic, and I encouraged him to research them some before deciding, so that he knows he'll be able to find what he needs on his chosen topic. We talked about how he could use videos as well as websites and his textbook for his research. Together we explored various websites, and he narrowed his topic to how Mussolini's use of power affected Italian society and culture."
"The student worked on his assignment for Future World Literature, which asked him to free-write about a fear and then write a reflection on his own writing. We also planned ahead for his social studies thesis paper."
"We reviewed the student's classwork, a discussion about tensions in the Middle East, and I showed him some sites to use to augment his in class instruction. We visited one of the sites, and discussed the issue, and history of the region in depth. We then spent the remainder of the session practicing DBQ questions from recent assessment exams."
"In this session we covered 2 assignments. The first involved reading given passages, then identifying the subject, purpose, audience, tone, and point of view. The student then had to write a paragraph to identify these, and use quotes from the passage. We worked together to find each required part, and the student developed her skills through the introduction of tools, such as breaking the passage into manageable sections and identifying key phrases. The student worked hard to complete this assignment. The second assignment involved reading posts made by other students in an online forum, and responding to those posts with specific prompts from the teacher. The student mostly required clarification as to what the prompts were asking, and once that was made clear, was quickly able to complete the assignment."
"I helped the student complete a number of paragraph responses to questions based on her history chapter. The chapter was about the abolitionists and the underground railroad. I helped the student pick out the important information from the text and helped her develop complete and thoughtful responses to the questions. I showed her how to take notes from the chapter in order to help her answer the questions. I found that she asked a number of thoughtful questions and showed interest in the subject matter."
