"This was our first meeting, so it functioned primarily as a diagnostic. The student is an excellent and hardworking learner who absorbs new information very quickly. He has strong communications skills, and so our class was organized around issues or questions that emerged in the course of conversation. He has a good command of present, past, and future indicative verb tenses and a functional vocabulary for everyday topics. We talked about his trip to Spain, his hobbies and interests, what he's learning about in school, and covered some finer points, e.g., regional language differences, appropriate use of articles for masculine words ending in -a, and the use of the subjunctive mood for talking about the future. For our upcoming classes, we will continue working on conversational fluidity, review his homework as needed, but most of all, we will focus on building his vocabulary by reading and discussing brief literary texts and other advanced reading materials. It was a fun class and I look forward to continuing to work with the student!"
"The student was preparing his trip to Mexico. He wanted to talk about food and how to order in a restaurant. He knows the vocabulary very well, and he was ready to eat a variety of food in Mexico. Was a good class as always."
"Yesterday, the student and I concentrated on preparation for the speaking portion of the AP Spanish exam. We began by reviewing hypothetical statements and questions, using the past subjunctive. We then moved onto speaking practice from actual old AP tests, using the same time constraints, recording his voice, playing it back and analyzing the good things he incorporated, as well as things that could be improved upon. We will continue to work on this kind of thing, incorporating both speaking and writing concepts up until the exam. He is a very smart young man, and is making excellent progress."
