Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"For this session, I had the student complete a series of reading comprehension packets ("Spitting to Survive," "Hitchhikers in the Bathroom," "The Tropical Rainforest," Old Text/New Text") that focused on reading comprehension, ISEE-related vocabulary, compare/contrast, and writing practice. He is very good at finding the important information within paragraphs and utilizing the information to answer content-specific questions. Some of the content was difficult for him to understand, but after a couple of hints/clues, he was able to make sense of it all and answer the questions correctly. In our next reading session, I will take the reading level and content up a notch in difficulty to see how he does."
"We did a vocabulary review section. The student can reliably use most of the words studied in the first four sections of the level three vocabulary book she is using. Overall, she had very good results. Then I made up multiplication and division problems (first without, then with decimals). Her speed on multiplication was much better today, and the decimals did not throw her off at all. Her overall understanding and speed improved in long division as well."
"The student took a practice test today that made her practice different operations. These included fractions, decimals, and turning one into the other. She did remarkably well, scoring an 85% overall. When we went on to look at the problems she got wrong, it was clear that she would have scored well into the 90s if she hadn't made little mistakes. These were mostly a product of not reading the question carefully before answering. We talked again about ways to avoid these errors and the importance of carefully reading the question and even underlying key phrases to know where to focus. We spent the rest of the session focusing on finding percentages of different numbers, dealing with ratios, and converting fractions into decimals. After my explanations, she did very well in each of these topics!"
