"She expressed to me that she was slightly worried about the math section of the test. After learning that she was in Honors English and reads multiple times a day, it made a lot of sense that she would be concerned about math. Mostly, she felt that she could get anything right that she had already worked on but was concerned by math problem types that she had never seen. As she had only just started on equations for lines, I figured geometry would be a great place to start. I gave her equations for finding area and circumference of circles then showed her how to apply them to questions that had been tripping her up. Then I showed her how to find equations of lines parallel and perpendicular to lines given in the question. She is a very neat worker, making it easy for me to follow her logic. I finished with her taking a verbal test, which she scored in the 76th percentile. With a little work on verbal strategy, she should jump into the 90th."
"We specifically went over all of the math homework I had assigned during our previous session. She had questions over some probability problems (probability of x AND y versus probability of x OR y). I went over it with her and gave her homework accordingly for more practice. I look forward to our next session."
"This was our first session together. The students both had taken practice tests before hand, which helped greatly. We spent the bulk of the session working on the language portion of the state achievement test, and the final half hour on the quantitative portion. Overall, I think the session went well, and our plan for Friday is to go over grammar rules for quotes and to review lie vs lay."
