Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We concentrated on his sentence formation, grammar, and vocab. In addition to his standard tutoring homework, we took vocab from The Raven, which we finished reading last week, and created sentences using concepts close to his mindset - words like wrought, radiant, and flung are very easily adapted to video games. We also went over a school assignment, within which I saw some improvement in grammatical structure and word use."
"In my last session with this student, we began by gauging her improvement in "w" vs. "v" phonemes in the words she has been practicing since last week. We had an informal discussion about her week to allow her to practice her impromptu conversational English, and then moved onto formal interview practice. She presented her three different interview monologues she had prepared and we revised a couple awkward phrases. Then we spent the rest of the time rehearsing what she would say in certain situational questions asked of her in an interview. We ended with a call-in from a marketing executive who she was able to ask questions of and who gave some interview advice and tips."
"Today, the student and I continued to work on "th" word pairs and we began to discuss the topic of fluctuation. We started the session by completing a set of "th" word pair exercises. Next, we read an excerpt from a bio about the student's favorite tennis player, Li Na. As we read the piece, I would correct him on any verbal mistakes that he made. Next, I brought a blank post card and gave the student seven minutes to write a short note to his cousin in China. The student was given three guidelines as to incorporate words and sounds that he had been struggling with. After he wrote the postcard, we were going to read it aloud, but the student did not finish in time and we decided to go back to the other exercises that we were working on instead. The student and I ended the session by discussing the importance of volume, speaking slowly, and fluctuation. In future sessions, we are going to focus on the rhythm of his voice. He has shown significant improvement in terms of pronunciation, but still has a ways to go in terms of rhythm and moving away from monotone speech."
