"Student A and I started with vocabulary flash cards today. He has his set of A words down and is doing well on B words. I gave him a new set of words starting with C to study for next time. We also did some more practice with analogies and looking for relationships among the answer choices when he doesn't recognize one or both of the words in the question prompt. I spent the remaining time with Student B. She and I finished the analogy section together. We talked about making eliminations of answer choices that had no sensible relationship and about deciding whether the first two words were similar or different in order to find answer choices that fit the same pattern. We then did some algebra practice. I gave her extra practice to do with variables as part of fractions because she was still having difficulties with this concept initially. I told her that regardless of what the fraction looks like she should start by multiplying both sides by the denominator to get rid of the fraction and make the problem easier. We also looked at inequalities. Initially, she didn't remember to switch the inequality sign when multiplying or dividing by a negative, so I gave her extra practice to do on that topic. I gave Student A problems to do in which he had to figure out analogy questions by elimination when some information was missing (to simulate not knowing one of the words) and some algebra practice. I gave Student B a mixed review of analogy questions and practice with fractions and algebraic equations."
"Today the student continued to work on practice exam problems from the Quantitative Reasoning section. He is working on word problems and conceptualizing the use of basic algebraic expressions. We discussed strategy for best approaching word problems and utilizing information given to obtain the correct answer. We also worked on discussing the concept behind writing algebraic expressions."
"In our math practice we did probability, which went very well. We practiced vocabulary with synonym and analogy questions, focusing in particular on prefixes and suffixes. We also read poetry and practiced all of the types of reading comprehension questions."
