Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we worked on understanding categorizing, as well as writing new letters (by playing Tic Tac Toe with letters other than X and O)."
"We reviewed the student's grades. The student said he has some quiz or assessment anxiety, and it appears that his grades were depressed by a poor early start to the school year, although recent homework and quiz results show improvement. We will continue to work on sticky concepts."
"It was such a pleasure to meet the student today. He walked me through the work he is doing in class. As discussed with his parents, we decided to first focus on some skills to help him excel in his social studies work, and then we'll apply some of those lessons to what might come up in upcoming standardized exams. He walked me through some of his grammar and writing assignments, and it's very clear he has a strong grasp of language. We focused most of our time on strategies to support his work on his upcoming speech about recreation in Canada. We talked about identifying the audience and goal of his speech. We played around with different ways to write an engaging introduction that would draw his classmates in, and did some spur-of-the-moment writing about Seattle. Since he has a lot of things to talk about in his speech, we talked a little bit about structure and strategies for organizing ideas. We will also continue to talk about ways to get around writer's block. Next time, we'll plan on looking at his speech and thinking about ways to make it even better. We might work on some short writing exercises, both to give him the chance to grow at something he told me he enjoys and also to do some early preparation for the kinds of questions he will be encountering in exams."
"The student continued work on parts of speech (noun, verb and adjectives). She seems to have mastered this as long as she does not rush her response. We also worked on common nouns and proper nouns. She did well on this and we will continue to work on it in the coming sessions. She is very good at alphabetical order and completed her sheets related to this skill. She has a wonderful attitude and is looking forward to her first day of second grade."
"Tonight we continued to work on mental math and the quickness with which the student can complete problems. Progress continues to be made. The subtraction tends to be a minute behind the addition which is very common! We also worked on fact families and seeing how they are all connected."
"The student continued working on his summer packet. He is doing a great job. He's extremely patient. I rarely have to correct him and he asks all the right questions when he needs to. I think he's an advanced reader. If he wanted to he could be at a third grade reading level. We also worked on his handwriting and I gave some instructions to practice a few letters for homework."
