Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I worked with Student 1 and Student 2 on their Algebra II review packet in preparation for their upcoming exam, and with Student 3 on trigonometric concepts in Precalculus. The board was utilized with both groups and they were able to voice their questions and concerns. These students have great potential in mathematics if they remain focused and try to put in the necessary and hard work into not only understanding the big picture concepts, but also the minutiae and details needed to obtain a correct answer."
"Tonight we completed the 30 question computer based homework. The student was able to complete the assignment on his own with little help. I think we need to review concepts and how they tie together. After the computer based homework, I had him complete a section in the reading comprehension book. He got a 100%, so I think he is making progress on that skill."
"We focused this session on working with arithmetic and geometric sequences and series. In particular, we discussed the five major formulas used for arithmetic and geometric sequences. We also went over numerous examples of how to use these formulas, both deriving the general form of a sequence by subtracting or dividing successive elements in the sequence and calculating sums of geometric or arithmetic sequences by utilizing the appropriate formula. After some practice, the student seemed fine with using the formulas when he knew which one to apply but was having a bit of difficulty with recalling which formula went with which type of series. I left him with some notes that identified the relevant formulas as well as providing examples of their use."
"The student is approaching the different sections of the ACT with confidence, and I believe she should see a much improved score overall on the test. She has some guidelines on how to study and prepare, and should be ready for this Saturday."
"The student has his final exam next week. His teacher provided a study guide so we spent our time working through that. The topics we covered were arithmetic and geometric series, sequence problems; problems dealing with mean, median, mode, variance, and standard deviation; and some basic probability problems. The student does very well when he knows the relative equations but he struggled with remembering a few of them, especially when it came to series and sequence problems. We only got through about a third of the study guide so I told him to finish it up and mark any ones he struggled with so we can spend our time working on those during our next session on Monday."
"We started by reviewing the concepts of rational functions and discontinuities. We also went through the concepts of solving rational functions with different denominators. Afterwards, we resubmitted her Chapter 7 quiz. The official grade was a 96% due to one of the grades being marked incorrect. However, when I went to review the questions our answer was the same as the one provided by the computer. I took a screen shot of the question and saved it to her computer to show the teacher."
