Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student studied for her science and Spanish tests. We also spent time on math because her math test is in 2 days. She has worked extremely hard to prepare for finals, and the end of the tunnel is in sight."
"Focused on the Math section of the ACT (and a bit on the Reading section), reviewing formulas, trigonometry, and so on."
"During today's session, the student completed one Full English Test (timed). She finished well within the allotted time. We went over all of the answers she marked incorrectly. She scored a 28. We also discussed the two test sections she had for homework. She scored a 27 on the English and a 32 on the Reading. In addition, we analyzed one of her essay samples and I proposed tips and strategies for improving her writing (mainly, organization-introduction, thesis, body paragraphs with topic sentences, conclusion). Her reading scores have been strong (she scored 32 twice). However, she needs a bit more practice with the English section (the grammar and mechanics). For homework, I have assigned two full English tests, one Reading test, and two essays."
"The student scored an 830 composite on this week's exam. I explained to her how difficult it is once you get to this point, that to gain additional points in each question correlates with a one point increase. She reported some issues with the limited time on the reading section, so I suggested that she complete another reading section for next week. Also, her mistakes in the English section don't seem to have a consistent pattern so she will best improve the score by doing more tests. For our meeting on Tuesday she will complete a new reading section."
"We continued work on the sections that the student had the most difficulty with on his first SAT exam. For the Sentence Error section, we began with a review of the types of errors in this section. I had him define these in his own words -- this, I feel, provides a solid foundation for this section and it seemed to help when we did some drills. We shifted our focus to the Reading Passages -- we solidified our strategies and took a practice exam on this section."
"Per the student's request, we looked at SAT Reading and Writing. In the Writing section, we worked on the sentence completion, one-blank only. She has an amazing vocabulary, and needs a boost in confidence and technique. We went over how to read a question effectively, and how to dissect foreign words. In the Reading section, we looked at the history passages, and saw that words that we use a certain way in present time might not be used the same way if a piece was written in 1855. We reviewed the best and fastest way to attack a question, without becoming anxious over the test being timed. We defined every word we did not know, and continued our dissection of foreign words."
"Today the student and I went over the rest of the no-calculator math section on the practice test. Next session she and I will review adding and multiplying complex fractions and solving systems of equations. Later on we will cover radicals and exponents, imaginary numbers, and trig. We went through a practice writing test. She excelled in grammar. We went over strategies for determining paragraph logic and order. We also began a basic strategy for the reading comprehension passages. For homework I have asked her to complete the first practice essay."
"The student and I spent some time going over his score report from the recent SAT. He improved on a couple specific sections. I was encouraged to see that he skipped more questions than he got wrong, and if he can use his time wisely on the January test, he should have greater success with balancing correct and incorrect answers. He indicated that he had trouble with a tough grammar section, so we did 25 grammar questions together from a diagnostic. He is certainly improving. We also did some specific math questions. I suggested that he work on vocab in context this week, since that was his strength in Critical Reading. We'll meet at least once more before the 23rd. He also asked about the ACT."
"We covered some math review, a lot of reading questions, and a few mechanics and grammar questions from the writing section. The student has a very good grasp of the language arts concepts, and just needs a little more practice with the types of questions that will appear on his test. I will try to send him a practice section to do before our next session."
"The student and I worked on a practice test for the new SAT. We covered the writing and language test and worked on test tactics during the first hour. During the second hour, we focused on the math portion of the test."
"Student A and I covered factoring quadratic polynomials, factoring quadratic trinomials, and how to use the distributive property to determine if you've factored something properly. With Student B, we covered simplifying expression with exponents using the rules of exponents, solving algebraic equations involving fractions, and evaluating made-up functions. I asked her to do 5 online flashcards for each algebra subtopic and to do every problem in two SAT math sections that she was sure she knew how to answer for next time."
"The student and I went over ACT Science drills. He needs some practice annotating details in the conflicting viewpoints science passage. Otherwise he's improving on the data representation and research summaries passage types."
