Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Yesterday, the student and I had a breakthrough with the coins. We first worked on identifying enlarged coins based on the pictures on the front and back of the coins. Then, after she had mastered that, we transitioned into pictures of smaller coins. By the end of the session, she was able to successfully identify coins in black and white based upon their picture."
"The student and I went over her homework, which was adding and subtracting with bigger numbers (thousands, ten-thousands, and hundred-thousands), and some word problems. She is improving greatly; she is getting faster and more efficient at her work. She was struggling for a little with determining whether to add or subtract in word problems, but she has since conquered that! She is a great student and I always look forward to tutoring her!"
"The student and I are still working on advancing his knowledge of math so that he will be able to test into a more advanced class. We worked on the relation of fractions, decimals, and percentages. I also introduced him to the equation that he can use to derive the price of discounted items that are for sale."
"Reviewed current subject homework of logarithmic functions and their reductions. She has shown improvement of how her work is shown on paper. The student needed help mostly with working function reduction and how to identify the best method to proceed."
"The student and I worked on synthetic division and long division of polynomials. Like most Algebra 2 students, he caught onto the synthetic division after a few problems."
"The students are both very smart kids. It is my opinion that they could both do very well in math. Their main goals are to (1) prepare for the final and (2) evaluate if they should stay in the advanced class next semester. They each are only occasionally having difficulty understanding a topic; their main challenge lies in doing enough preparation for the exams. During this session, we went through their probability worksheets and started looking into some of the trigonometry they were having trouble with. We set up a few more sessions. I asked that they bring their syllabi with them as soon as possible so that we can prepare for what is on the final exam."
"We covered completing the square. He understood more clearly at the end of the session. He has his own homework to practice. The session went really well!"
"The student has just started working on comparing fractions in school. We worked on a homework assignment on this topic. This is still very new to him, and we discussed how to find a least common denominator. Once we were able to find the LCD, he was usually able to compare the fractions without much difficultly. He was very focused today and worked hard."
"The student is going to test for admission to a private school. We discussed strategies and answers to the different questions of a practice book. She and I need to review several of the math objectives covered in the test. We had great rapport, and support from both mom and dad. I look forward to continuing the tutoring. We plan on working each Monday and Friday."
"In our session, the student and I focused primarily on her homework which covered solving linear inequalities and graphing those results. She did wonderfully and we will continue to work on various methods of solving inequalities in our next session which is to be held on Thursday."
"The student and I had a good session, completing various quizzes and unit reviews. She got just shy of 90% on one of the longer quizzes on interval notation and inequalities. We talked over using reasoning skills to come up with quick ways to remember tougher, longer concepts, particularly around functions that involve absolute value calculations. She is working on two written quizzes that we will review next session. She also did a chapter lecture and practice on linear inequalities: conventions and calculations. Next time I will also do a little bit of a detour and review graphing and y=mx+b linear equations."
"The student and I first worked on his algebra class's work. He did very well and will start preparing for his exam in a couple weeks. He and I worked on simplifying radicals of different indexes. He was very skilled and only needed a clarification on when to use absolute value signs. Next week he and I will meet on Monday, Wednesday and Friday to study for his exam."
