"The student and I began work on the final chapter of her Algebra class, which focuses on Rational Expressions and fractions. The student is generally familiar with fractions and the basics flew by, so we focused on the complications of factoring and dealing with polynomials within fractions."
"Today, we looked at a review for the student's upcoming test over factoring polynomials. She had said that she had felt generally comfortable with the material, but there were some specific types that she had been apprehensive over; namely factoring polynomials with number coefficients on the highest term. Fortunately, her review had plenty of such problems for us to look over. After we discussed how to handle those questions, the student found a strategy that worked for her and had little difficulty solving them."
"In this session, the student and I worked through a set of problems dealing with identifying characteristics of quadratic functions (i.e. domain, range, vertex, intervals of increase/decrease). Each problem asked to either graph a function or to make a function based on a graph; this involved using the y=a(xh)+k formula. After I showed her a few examples, she started to catch on, and by the end of the session she was able to complete an entire problem on her own!"

"Tonight we reviewed factoring polynomials by determining the greatest common monomial factor of a given polynomial expression. We discussed some examples from her workbook. We looked in depth at how to determine the solutions (or find the zeros/roots) of quadratic trinomials. I showed her how to check answers by graphing on a graphing calculator. The student was most concerned with making improvements on solving for given expressions that first needed factoring. She scored amongst the highest performances in her class on her recent district administered benchmark exams, making only a few minor errors. The student is always self motivated and excited to improve, and she stated that she always feels much more confident with her coursework upon the conclusion of each tutor session."

He occasionally needed a few reminders about formulas for things such as the axis of symmetry or the vertex, but he quickly remembered these after a few problems. We then began our review of chapter 8 in preparation for his test next Monday. I started by going through each section and pointing out the important concepts and methods discussed in each one. I spent some bit of time deriving each formula and explaining their usage. We ended our session with a few practice problems from these sections, and we planned to devote the majority of our next session to going through practice problems."
