"We spent a few minutes going over the "Rules of Divisibility" print-out sheet and fold-able reference guide I made for the student to assist him with finding equivalent fractions, reducing fractions, and factoring. I also introduced him to an anthology of short stories. We then spent the rest of the session taking an online practice test on inference. The student did great on this!"
"The student's homework and the test were on ratios, and we worked through each problem, with her doing the problem first, and me giving her faster ways to do the work and giving her some extra problems to reinforce the techniques we worked on together. We worked especially on ratio tables, trying a few different types of examples, and looking at different types of problems that work or don't work well with ratio tables. We found that for her, ratio tables are good for working step-by-step from small numbers up to bigger multiples. We also looked at a few multiplication and division shortcuts, as well as time-saving strategies for finding least common multiples and greatest common factors. She expressed some concern about timing, saying that she's slow with arithmetic, so I think the shortcuts (coupled with an understanding of when they are and aren't helpful, and an understanding of where they come from) will help her in testing situations. By the end of the session, she said she felt ready for the test."
"I went over the math homework with the student. I assigned her additional homework. I am certain she will great on the test!"
