Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed chapters for her upcoming test the next day. We went over the liver, what it produces, and its role in the body. We then went over the kidneys and nephrons and how they function. We then briefly went over the pancreas and the secretion of glucagon by alpha cells and insulin by beta cells and how that effects glucose levels in the ecf."
"The student had a test on Friday so we spent the session completing the review. Her test is over incomplete, codominance and multiple allele Punnett squares and pedigrees. She was very proud of how her presentation over albinism went."
"During this session, we reviewed characteristics of plants and spent a lot of time covering the reproductive system of plants and the different parts of the plant reproductive system. After reviewing it for some time, he understood it and knew the parts very well. We then reviewed different human organ systems, which the student understood very well. We spent the last few minutes reviewing ecosystems."
"We reviewed chapter 11 for his upcoming test. We covered Mendelian genetics and meiosis. He understands the concepts as we talk about them in context. We discussed study skills and I made recommendations for using flashcards and explaining concepts to others as a means for studying. It is important to memorize terms but they will become more meaningful and useful when they can be applied."
"On Tuesday we worked on the student's paper for Biology. She had a pretty good start on it but wanted to make sure she answered all parts in the rubric. On Saturday we made some edits to her rough draft. She had all the questions answered but there were some areas where she could elaborate more showing a strong understanding of the material. She is going to work on adding a little more to the paper. She also needs to go in and put it in MLA formatting with all of the citations. We also watched her biology video and she filled out the study guide. They have just started fossil dating. She was pretty comfortable with this topic."
"The session was productive. We went over his respiratory system study guide which had about 40 questions. He knew most of the answers; he just needs to study the guide a few more times in order to do well."
"We covered genetics worksheets. The genetics worksheets focused on Punnett square problems for incomplete, complete, and co-dominance. She did very well on problems after practicing a few, and felt comfortable enough to attempt problems on her own."
"Today, we reviewed new material since the student's last test, which included topics on DNA and RNA structure, DNA replication and protein translation. We covered basic concepts and specific keywords in each section of the chapter. As we prepare for her final test before the final exam, I will plan to bring more practice multiple choice questions to our study sessions. Also, next week we will start reviewing topics for the final exam, which will comprise about half of each tutoring session."
"Today we reviewed DNA replication and the cell cycle, including inter phase and mitosis. We have been going over these concepts for multiple sessions, so the student fully understands all of these concepts. I am confident that he will do very well on his exam tomorrow."
"The student has a test in Biology on Wednesday, so we worked through his review assignment from his teacher. Chapter 16 focuses on various groups of organisms, and being able to identify relevant characteristics like energy and carbon sources. The assignment was fairly extensive (54 pages), but he was able to complete it and then start reviewing terms online."
"We covered the chapter on vertebrates, finished a lab that is due tomorrow, and finished a worksheet on the chapter due later in the week."
"In this session the student and I discussed her recent exam. She did very well! Overall she is feeling more confident with the content of the course. We began to review the new section of content. This included membranes and how they work with proteins and allow transportation of content in and out of the cell. Additionally we covered how the cell generates energy and how the energy is stored and used within cellular processes. Finally, we discussed proteins and enzyme recognition and activation sites. There was a significant amount of content in these lectures. I asked her to review them again before we meet next."
