Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed the student's answers from a practice exam and outlined some possible strategies for improvement by next week. More specifically, the student has a good understanding of mechanics. The student will begin reading the passages twice and taking notes afterwards--this greater attention to detail should help her."
"Student and I spent time on math and verbal. We went over a broad range of problems so that I could see if there were topics she hasn't covered yet. She did well, and will do better and better with more practice. We did about half a math diagnostic test and a few problems from a verbal diagnostic test."
"During our third session, I worked with the student on sentence completion questions within the reading section of the SAT. I showed her different strategies and we applied them to 15 sentence completion questions from an SAT prep book. She is to complete 19 sentence completions questions by next week. I also gave her two short articles to read that demonstrate clear writing and utilize great vocab words."
"Student and I did a final review before his exam. We reviewed several types of probability problems, mainly dice and cards. We reviewed mean, median, mode, and range questions. We did some variations including class averages, stem-and-leaf diagrams, and comparing mean and mode of different sets. We reviewed arithmetic series and basics for geometric series. We also did problems for alternative interior and exterior angles. We spent the last few minutes reviewing testing strategies, which he seemed very comfortable with. He also had planned for typical questions on the essay portion."
"We discussed the 5 paragraph essay and 6 trait rubric used for scoring the writing section. We also discussed a number of writing prompts and steps to determine what is being asked for and how to establish points for essay body. I gave the student a website with additional writing prompts to work with before our next session."
"Today we did a lot of work on photosynthesis. We discussed the process, the biochemistry and the end results of photosynthesis while at the same time conceptually linking it to the metabolic processes going on in the mitochondria. This was an important session because the student's test will be heavy on cellular metabolism. I thought this session was great and she seemed to understand the concepts effectively. The next step will be applying these concepts to a test format."
"We covered the sections the student worked on last night during our session today, sections 1 & 2, from practice test one. One was verbal and one was math. We went over the few missed problems and strategies for getting them correct! We also did an entire section on math (47 problems) from the same book. He is to rest up before the test tomorrow. He is well-prepared and will do well."
"We had a great session focusing on the SAT verbal section. I am pleased with her lists of derivatives of the roots in units 1 & 2. Her vocabulary is expanding, and she is thinking more critically about words. For next week, she will review vocabulary units 1 & 2, and she will make derivative lists for units 3 & 4. We made a condensed study sheet for the SAT critical reading section. It is a one-page, personal review of the test-taking strategies we have learned and incorporated. Next, we did a practice SAT critical reading section. She did an excellent job with the sentence completion, and a good job with the passages. For the single section we did, she was at or above her goal critical reading score. Moving forward in critical reading, we will focus on consistency, focus, and staying calm so she can sustain those scores over the length of the whole test."
"She had received her initial online SAT scores. She was pleased, as she'd increased her scores from the last testing, but wants to improve further. We'll assess how we'll focus that prep once she gets the full report. She's been nominated for an award and, if she's selected, she'll be able to participate in a week long conference. To apply, she needs to write an essay on why she wants this honor and provide a resume. We spent the rest of the session outlining what she'd include in her essay and resume. She has emailed me drafts of each which I will critique and return."
"Today, we focused primarily on math, going through some of the math tips from the PDF. We powered through to cover topics such as ratios of lengths/areas, absolute values, exponent properties, shaded regions, and more. We finished with a practice math section that she did very well on (acing the easy-medium problems); she just needs to continue to practice sections on her own and expose herself to more variations of math questions. I recommended that she do at least 3 practice math sections and an essay on her own."
"We covered probability, taxes, sales and profit margins. The student struggled with several different computations in those subjects with which he was less familiar. The student was generally motivated to learn the material. We worked on strategies for problem interpretation and how to appropriately use algebra in order to solve. For tomorrow, the student will complete at least one of the Reading Comp practice sets I sent him."
"Today's session with the student gave focus to prismatic geometry and graphic functions of circles. She worked very quickly and with minimal errors. Today, she succeeded in fully internalizing the calculation method for this type of problem and used it properly to solve several practice questions."
