Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We began with brainstorming responses to essay writing prompts. We continued with fiction and nonfiction passages from the 8th grade reading assessment. We finished with math concepts from learning tools, negative numbers, word problems, etc., as reflected in the student's math assessment."
"The student and I started with a Math warm up, playing a game called 100 or Bust. Using multiples of 10s, she found strategies to get to 100. Then, we did some math practice problems-definitely an area of strength for the student. She got caught on the actual specific question being asked, so reading and rereading before selecting the answer will be helpful for the student. Next, we moved onto Reading Passages. She did an excellent job on the straightforward comprehension questions with the reading passages, but had trouble with interpreting the context within passages. We will do a lot more work on this in the next session. Once the student slows herself down and reads and rereads, she is able to come up with the right answer, but she's not quite doing that independently yet. We ended with roots and prefixes with vocabulary. She did a great job today!"
"The student and I did some verbal practice today, and I was pleased with how he did. It's nice to have questions like the verbal ones that go quickly and clearly advance in difficulty. It enables the student to engage easier and makes it more like a game. Next time we'll try and figure out how to do that with math."
