Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I discussed extensively her homework concerning inequalities and graphing functions. Her homework for the class is extensive, and I would recommend spending at least 2.5 hours a week working together on her homework."
"In today's session we reviewed the student's math homework, covering power functions and their graphs. This included learning transformations and end behavior of functions greater than a degree of 2."
"We started working through function transformations before moving on to composite functions. The student seemed to pick up this new topic very quickly. After composites, we moved on to related-rates type problems (mainly just word problems), for which I showed her the main strategy for solving. After walking through a handful of examples, this type of problem became a lot easier for her."
"I worked with both students today. Both students worked very hard in this session. With Student 1, we worked mainly on linear optimization problems. These are word problems where we have a situation that has constraints, and we are looking for some kind of maximization. We also worked on systems of equations and other word problems. With Student 2, we worked on finding the roots of higher order equations. We spent much of the time on two very difficult roots questions. He did a good job following the long process we had to take to solve the problem. We discussed the rational root theorem and how to find all potential roots. I look forward to our weekly meeting next week."
"Today we covered polynomials, specifically secant/tangent lines, finding zeros in a polynomial, finding the vertex of parabolas in various forms, and showing how the axis of symmetry can be found from intercept form. The student seems very confident; she just needed a little further explanation on a couple things."
"The student obtained her chapter test review, and the test will be coming up in the next week or two. We focused on how functions shift (up/down/left/right), compress/stretch and/or reflect. I focused on what and why certain functions graph the way they do, such as abs value, polynomials and sqrt. She was uncertain of the functions graphically, but after examination, she felt confident in her analysis. Next week we need to focus on completing the square to solve and analyze functions."
