Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We completed test topics for Chapter 13. We have yet to begin test topics for Chapter 14. I have suggested that we meet again on Sunday to complete Chapter 14. I have asked her to work on the Chapter 14 concepts on her own to help us move through the information faster."
"We just reviewed genetics one final time in preparation for a Wednesday test. She seems to be really grasping the material and starting to memorize facts, I think she's shown a great deal of improvement."
"During this session, with the student, his photosynthesis-food coloring lab was completed (finished the 2nd bar graph and the analysis). With another student, Newton's 3 laws of motion were reviewed by completing a class-given worksheet."
"In the beginning so the session the student read over the slides about various animal phyla. The student has a test scheduled for Friday, so for the remainder of the session I tested the student."
"Today's session was used to discuss transcription and translation in tandem with each other. In addition to looking at both processes in great detail, we examined how the processes differ in relation to prokaryotes and eukaryotes. We finished by looking at the types of mutations that can take place and how they affect protein products. Next week's sessions will be dedicated to preparing for her test Tuesday. I am pleased with her understanding of the material and will quiz her on the finer points."
"We reviewed the differences between mitosis and meiosis, went through the steps of interphase, described the steps in mitosis, and looked at the steps and products in each division of meiosis. His homework is to draw and label the phases of mitosis and meiosis."
"The student studied for an upcoming biology test over cellular respiration. She also studied for a test over systems of equations. She is well prepared for both and should do well. We also went over her geometry home work, which was finding x and y with similar triangles."
"Yesterday, we worked on getting the student ready for her genetics mastery quiz. We did the mastery assignment, which involved a lot of pedigree charts and Punnett squares. Then, we did a genetics review with even more practice problems. We focused a lot on sex-linked traits. She was able to do the problems correct every time. She should be well prepared for her quiz. Before our next session on Thursday, she is supposed to complete her learning objectives for the chapter, and we will go over those and finish studying for her chapter 14 test that is on Friday."
"At today's session with the student, we completed his science homework for tonight, which was 4 questions from section 14.4 of his textbook. I helped him find the answers in the text and discussed some of the concepts with him further. Topics included renewable and nonrenewable resources, sustainability, and fragmentation of resources. Additionally, we went back over sections 14.1-14.3 and reviewed some of the vocabulary from those sections. He and I also went over some algebra today. We reviewed the general format of the equation for a line, the concept of slope, how to calculate slope, how to create a table of values, how to calculate x-intercepts and y-intercepts, and how to plot a line based on an equation."
"Today we covered and reviewed multiple topics in order to prepare for a final test tomorrow. Topics were on metabolism and the relation of exercise and diet on it. Slow and fast metabolism. we also reviewed cellular respiration and photosynthesis. We went over her old quizzes and tests and we summarized and organized all the information needed for her to do well tomorrow."
"In this session, we reviewed past material that she struggled with, then worked on her homework for the current material she is on. This included Punnett squares, the history of Mendel, and other topics related to genetics and passing on genetic material."
"Student 1 - I covered the process of photosynthesis, the reactants and products, along with the location within the plant that it occurs. We went over an entire packet that his teacher gave him. We also covered digestion, the organs and each of their functions along with the types of nutrients. Student 2 needed help with Earth Science. We went over an exam that she had on astronomy. She had problems understanding celestial meridians and the difference between geocentric and heliocentric. Also she had issues with the movement of the sun in relation to changes of the season. I was able to show her a couple pictures that helped her see why the sun is lower in the sky during the winter versus the summer."
