"I believe that a good tutor can adapt to fit individual students’ learning styles (in fact, I even did some research on this!), and I enjoy coming up with both fun examples that make the material relevant to the student and memorable. I spend a lot of time in my lab, doing research with both typically developing and at-risk infants and children, to try and figure out how to find ways to identify risk factors for disorders such as Autism at an early age. Outside of the lab, I enjoy hiking and cycling, reading (especially classic novels, current fiction, and classic science fiction), and going to see live music shows (mostly jazz and alternative ...

Additionally, during my PhD years I have mentored undergraduates who went on to attend great institutions, as well, for their professional and graduate degrees. "It was a wonderful experience, and I have learned so much: not just good teaching methods, but also how to relate to students on a personal level. This, I feel, is more important because it helps me connect the concepts that I'm teaching to something that they are more familiar with. While my thirst to get into the lab has brought me to San Diego State, tutoring gives me a way to help students that still connects me to the teaching experience. In my spare time, I like to get out in the sun! Play golf, basketball, football, any kind of outdoorsy sport." ...

A photo of Derek who is one of our San Diego GRE tutors
" In college as a music major, general math requirements were the bane of my existence. I had to retake classes and attend tutoring sessions myself. But eventually, I discovered how to tackle it, and down the road, chose to stick with the math and study economics. All of this has taught me how to be patient and positive toward my students, and taught me the importance of building up confidence through gradual improvement. But my life is not only about teaching and being a student. I compose music on the side, love sci-fi and The Simpsons (the early seasons!) and live for the day that the Padres make it back to the World Series -- eventually. ." ...

" I don't believe there is such a thing as a difficult subject, I just believe that each student has strengths and weaknesses, and that it is best to focus on the strengths and use them to overcome the weaknesses. For example, some students struggle with word problems in math, but they enjoy drawing pictures. I like to teach students how to draw pictures to solve word problems. If you start with what you are good at and slowly work toward those things that you are not so good at, there's no limit to what you can learn."
