Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Ronald in Grayslake, IL
The student and I reviewed his chemistry assignment worksheets for molar concentrations. It seems he is starting to pick up a lot of information from the class instructor and his own studying. I mostly supervised his work and helped give pointers for strategies of approaching this topic.

The student and I went over intramolecular bonding yesterday, and we went over intermolecular bonding today. For intermolecular bonding, we discussed hydrogen bonding, dipole dipole interaction, and London dispersion force. For intramolecular bonding, we talked about the ionic bonds, covalent bonds, and metallic bonds.

The student and I covered geometry and chemistry during our session this evening. He has a geometry quiz on 3/12/15 and was given a similar problem which he would be asked to solve on the actual quiz. We made sure he understood all concepts in order to properly solve the problem. Then, I changed the numbers of the problem so he may practice with different values (he does not have a textbook to find more problems from there). After he felt confident he would do well with the upcoming geometry quiz, we shifted over to chemistry. We covered concepts he has some trouble with, including half-reactions, combustion reactions, balancing half-reactions and combustion reactions, as well as writing a chemical equation from a word problem. He is a very bright student and continues to comprehend difficult material with such ease!

The student and I continued to work on logarithmic and exponential equations. He was supposed to have a test at the end of this week but he said the test would be postponed until next week. He did tell me that he did well on his practice test and felt pretty good about the material. We continued to make sure that he was approaching the material in a way that was going to help him succeed. We talked a good amount about test taking strategies and tools that he could use to make his life a little easier during the tests. Sometimes he has a difficult time remembering what we talk about week to week, but when he gets on a roll, he really flourishes.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Kimyen in Grayslake, IL
For today's session we worked on biology and math. For the student's biology class, she had an essay to read and answer 5 questions. The questions were relatively easy to answer and she got them quickly by reading the questions first then reading the essay. After she got the questions, I went over the reading with her and showed her how I would approach reading the article. I showed her how to break down the content of the essay, key transition words, and points the author was trying to get across. I will try to find some short essays for the next session to help her with her reading comprehension so that she can get the most out of reading anything going forward. For her math class, she was working on simple factoring problems. I think she will be learning how to factor quadratic equations next, so we covered that briefly as well to give her an advantage in class.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Cynthia in Grayslake, IL
Today the student had homework that required for us to use the textbook. He had 8 vocabulary words and phrases that he needed to use in a paragraph with blank spaces. The words needed to be conjugated correctly and placed in the right blank space. When we completed this, we had to translate the paragraph into English. He did well with deciphering what the words meant but had some problems with translation. We then moved on to reading a conversation that the book had listed between two friends. He read it and translated to confirm comprehension. He then moved on to answering questions that related to the conversation he read. Next session is set up for next week at noon.
