"We specifically covered three areas that the student needed additional work on: in the PSAT math section, we talked about the properties of exponents and performed a number of practice problems to illustrate some of those points. We talked about some mnemonic devices for applying the rules of exponents to abstract concepts (e.g.: x to the power of a) and for finding ways to find the right answer quickly. We explored ways to perform algebraic expressions and talked about the importance of formulating clear strategies (in this instance, by way of formulating clear steps to follow and safe ways to simplify answers). After exploring these concepts and performing a number of practice questions, we transitioned to talking about the PSAT critical reading section. We talked about different forms of punctuation and sentence structure; identifying component parts of words (such as prefixes, suffixes, and roots); and looking for words that signify either agreement, contrast, or conditionality. From there, we transitioned into talking about identifying meaning in social science passages, part of the student's PSAT critical reading diagnostic that indicated room for growth. She has struggled with picking the best answer in cases where there are two or three answers that look good, so as we discussed questions after she chose an answer, we looked at the importance of reading the whole answer to make sure it aligns exactly with the text. She showed substantial improvement in this area. I left the student with two targeted practice tests, one for critical reading and one for math, that I asked her to do before our next session on Saturday."
"Today our session began by going over the basics of the PSAT and the general strategies for achieving the best score possible. Then we reviewed a practice test the student had complete on her own. We reviewed all of the questions she had answered incorrectly and any she was hesitant about. After this we continued with practice questions focusing on math. We also included a few sentence correction questions to take a break from math. The student is very strong in most areas. One of the areas she identified as a more difficult subject is geometry. At the next session we will focus on geometry problems to start off. Afterwards, we will complete a practice test session by session. This time we will include the reading comprehension sessions as well."
"We covered concepts in coordinate geometry, plane geometry (circles), humanities passage-based questions, and writing strategies."
