Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During today's session, the student and I continued to review large-order numbers, verb forms, and vocabulary. He shows basic mastery of time, and his number sense has greatly improved. With regard to larger numbers, he tends to make the same mistakes (place order, irregular forms, etc.), so we will continue to drill these problem areas until they are intuitive. He has made substantial progress since we began our sessions, and I am very pleased with his competency level entering the 9th grade school year."
"We covered the student's previous work in Spanish from the 2nd grade. He had a good grasp on many of the vocabulary lessons that he had worked with previously, especially numbers. He mentioned that he would like to work on speaking, so I have decided to use an immersive technique with him, limiting our time in English. I left him to some homework for the next time we meet (a week from today). He will make "el reloj" and work on some phrases. The next time I meet with him I would like to work on some phrases to use during our lessons and ask him how his studies in school are going."
"We finished covering Chapter 1A ?Que te gusta hacer? of the text book. We started by reviewing Actividad 8 ?Que te gusta hacer? Then I introduced the student to the three conjugations of Spanish verbs: -ar, -er, and -ir. She completed Actividad 9 ?Cual es? and Actividad 10 Tres papeles. Later, I quizzed her on what she likes and dislikes to do. We went over Actividad 17 ?Que te gusta mas? We reviewed the pronunciation of the vowels a, e, and i in Spanish, and listened to two children songs. Finally, we read the reading section of the chapter, ?Que te gusta hacer? and answered reading comprehension questions about the text."
"I introduced the student to the usages of por and para. We will be going over a few of these usages each lesson in combination with the other topics suggested by her previous tutor. We also went over conjugations for the simple past tense or preterite. I showed her how to use the verb drill online. When she did subsequent exercises her scores were mostly 90% or above. I did give her homework exercises. She catches on quickly and has retained her previous classwork well."
"Today the student and I had our final session. We reviewed and practiced vocabulary words using his Spanish Language multiple choice flash cards. We then completed approximately four sections of listening comprehension exercises using the Spanish Language CD and workbook. He and I discussed the answers to each question of each exercise. We finished the session with an exercise from the grammar section of the Spanish workbook where he conjugated verbs in a paragraph. He worked very hard, and I am impressed with the level of Spanish he was able to maintain over the summer. I know he will have a great school year!"
"The student and I spent our sessions talking about news stories from the week in German. I came with a list of questions to start conversation and we went one by one through two sets of reports. She did very well with the conversation, bringing in subjects we had discussed previously and using grammar that we had worked on in the past (especially the passive). For our next meeting we will do the same thing."
