Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today I had the student work through an ACT Mathematics practice section under testing conditions. He completed the test with a few minutes to spare, and he scored very well (missing 8 out of 60 questions and earning a 30 subscore). I am not worried about his Math score; it is continuing to prove his best subject. I have asked him to do some more Reading practice before our next session."
"We did the tutoring session separately again today. With the first student, we looked up different terms for very specific fish online. A tang is a type of fish he had never heard of in English. The Achilles Tang is called a "chirurgien Achilles" in French, an Achilles surgeon. We drew pictures and he really wasn't ready to leave when his time was up. The second student and I watched Beyblades and Skylanders in French. He asked me how to say "I am" in French which is "je suis." We drew several pictures. He's starting to catch more individual words in the videos."
"The student worked on subtraction of three digit problems. She is really doing well on this concept. She also worked on simple division in practice for her test this week. We also worked on writing number stories for multiplication problems. She needs some more practice writing and drawing a picture to represent the problem. She worked on simple addition problems using pennies and dimes to show the problems and then counting to get the answer. She still needs to work with addition."
"Today the student was eager to work and did very well with each task. She took a timed test on her 3x tables and completed it in less than 3 mins. She worked on elapsed time and making change. At first she was anxious about each task. But after I broke the concepts down to more comprehensible pieces she felt more confident and was able to grasp the material successfully."
"We started a rough draft for a project that is due in two weeks. We went over homework assignments from last week. We discussed working on his wording by choosing stronger synonyms for commonly used words and reviewed what makes a complete sentence and what makes a paragraph."
"I helped the student with coming up with some example problems about balance of payments and comparative advantage. He was not as confident in the balance of payments. I showed him the pages in the book that covered balance of payments and had the concept explained. The extra practice was done during the session. The win is that he understands comparative advantage quite well."
