Today the student and I worked on understanding the relationship between positive and negative numbers for her math class. We also continued working on her Apache tribe project for English and social studies. She showed a lot of creativity and attention to detail. I was very pleased with her work today. I want her to continue working on distinguishing between absolute value and the value of the negative numbers.

We worked on a chapter review for a quiz he has tomorrow on multiplying, dividing, adding and subtracting polynomials. He still needs to practice remembering what he's learned at the beginning of homework, remembering what to do with negatives and parenthesis.

Tutoring review by Greg in Grand Island, NY
The student has a test on Friday that covers their Ch 9 on transformations. This includes translations, reflections, and stretching/shrinking while using the two parent functions y=x^2 and y=abs(x). I made a practice test for him that had a total of 40 questions. The questions were composed of a variety of types: given function and transformations performed graph the result, given the graph name the function and the transformations performed, given the parent and list of transformations write the equation, etc. I also included a series of questions in which he had to evaluate a function at a given value of x, which his last homework had a few of these types of questions. Overall, he did very well on this practice test. He made a few mistakes on evaluating functions that included absolute values. I noticed he made a similar mistake on his previous homework, so I made sure to include this type of problem to help prepare him. His teacher also provided them with a review worksheet, which we talked through together. Overall, I'm quite confident that he's going to do well on this test if he takes his time and double checks for mistakes.
