Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"For today's session I reviewed phonics mixed vowel sounds (short and long) and reviewed the vowel-consonant-e spelling pattern that always results in long vowel-consonant-silent e. The student struggles following the rule and would pronounce it with a short vowel. We did some manipulating to try to help him better understand how to apply the rule. For example, he pronounced "time" with a short vowel "i". When I covered the "e" and had him pronounce the word "tim" he did so correctly but he struggled again when I uncovered the "e". We reviewed several dozen words, then I had him read some readers from his school that were used at the beginning of the year. When I first started working with him, his teacher loaned me quite a few readers from the beginning of the year (starting with number 1 through 34). We picked up with #13, then #14 and finally #15. We ended our session by playing a game. I made up really short easy sentences and had him read them to me - I put them in order. I encouraged him to draw an illustration or copy them onto the white board I brought with me. Overall, he put in a solid effort today."
"Today we worked on short a words. We began with a review of the alphabet letters and sounds. Our focus was making words with the short a sound in the beginning and middle of words."
"We covered the letter 'L,' and words that begin and end in the letter L, drawing the letter L. We also did number recognition, practicing writing the number 2. The student had a great attitude towards the activities and had good focus. I asked him to come up with one word that starts with the letter L for next week."
