Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"For our final session I gave the student a mini practice test with multiple choice questions and one full essay. Grading this the student did very well (86%) on the multiple choice and wrote around a mid-high grade essay by my estimation. While paragraphs lack internal organization, his thesis and points are good enough to compensate for this leaving me very optimistic for his test prospects. No extra practice or concerns."
"The student and I reviewed a bit about political parties and organizing essays. Then we spent the majority of the remainder of the session going over the chapters from the book up to the 20th century. She has impressed me with her ability to remember many details (events, people, concepts), which gives me confidence she will perform well. The next session is the next day, so I told her just to review as much of the 20th century chapters from the book as possible."
"The student and I used a history text to run through the beginning of FDR's presidency as well as the events leading up to WWII. We discussed the "alphabet soup" of his various acts and proposals to try to shore up and ultimately heal the US economy. Given that she is a visual learner, we are using the pictures, graphs, and maps in the text to provide context and a memory framework."
"We continued to review for the AP US history exam by outlining various essays and doing multiple choice questions together. I also reviewed an essay the student wrote and I suggested ways to improve it. Lastly, I gave her general tips on ways to improve her performance on Wednesday's test. I did not see any grades and I did not leave any practice other than suggesting she continue to go over sections she is least familiar with."
"Today when I met with the student she wanted to study for her APUSH exam, which is tomorrow. Antebellum history is something that I remember well, since it was covered extensively in my APUSH class in 11th grade! She and I worked through a test booklet which reviewed the material, and where applicable I summed up my own knowledge and added anything that I could. I wish her the best of luck on her exam tomorrow, and will see her next week for more ACT prep."
"We ran through the two topics for the questions that are between now and our next session. She seemed very comfortable with the DBQ topic on the Arab-Israeli conflict, familiar with the basic facts and able to parse the documents and use them to both support her answers and develop further ones. On the other question, which is more freeform, she again showed a good base of knowledge, although sometimes she didn't remember which war was associated with which event. Looking back over those specifically might be helpful, but that also will vary with what questions she gets asked. We will continue to work on this next session."
