Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"With student 1, did some practice with English --> Latin translation, and then worked on translating more Cicero, dealing with grammatical issues as they arose. With student 2, worked on exercises with derivatives, and then reviewed the formation of the perfect again. He felt confident about a possible pop quiz after having reviewed the material again."
"I started this session with the student by going over the English section of the practice test he took. I reminded the student of the rules he needs to know for the English section and we went over every answer that he missed. We then did the same for the Math, Reading and Science section. The student seemed to understand why he missed all of the questions that he did and he showed an increased understanding of the rules he needs to use on the various sections of the ACT."
"We discussed Chapter 5 in the student's Physical Sciences textbook. The chapter detailed the origin and evolution of the periodic table, and we focused on the trends inherent to the modern periodic table. We went through and he took notes on each section of the chapter, noting how elements in the same column have similar chemical properties. We also went through each group that has an A designation on the periodic table, discussing the typical traits of elements in each group. We finished by taking the review quiz at the end of the chapter, and the student did quite well."
"We covered Critical Reading today. The student has read through all the math sessions, and has done some practice critical reading problems. He had been struggling with some of the reading comprehension, so specifically requested to cover the critical reading today. He is aware of the strategies suggested in the SAT book, but struggles to implement the strategies. I think his struggles are directly linked with how fatigued he is, so we really need to work on building up stamina, and not getting discouraged by incorrect answers. Learning more vocabulary will also help, so the student is making lists of all the unfamiliar words he encounters to make flashcards."
"Today the student and I spent our time focusing on circuits and electrostatics. For the first hour of the session, we went over the basics of circuits, including voltage, current, resistance, Kirchhoff's laws, and series verse parallel circuits. After getting a good grasp on the material with resistors and capacitors, we then moved on to going over her problem set that served as a good review for her test. For the problems we didn't have time to cover in depth, we focused on going over how to approach each of them. She is a very quick learner and she made tremendous progress."
