Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I continued reviewing algebra topics: numbers, rational numbers, irrational numbers, integers, whole numbers; we reviewed adding, multiplying, subtracting, dividing fractions with and without variables, common base, the temperature conversion equation, slope, and intercept."
"The student showed continued progress today with both composite functions and solving quadratic equations, but she still had a few issues to work on in terms of arithmetic errors, calculator input errors, and occasionally forgetting steps of each process. However, after my instruction to double-check each step, the student improved even more. I also spoke with the student's father before leaving to give him an update on our progress and strategy going forward."
"For this session, we exclusively covered her review for her exam tomorrow. We focused extensively on solving equations for circles, finding the midpoint and radius, domain and range for linear functions, solving and graphing equations using point slope and y intercept, solving parallel and perpendicular lines, etc. The student has made very good progress from yesterday's session but was still a little apprehensive being a little nervous before tomorrow's exam. At the end of the session, I suggested some additional practice problems in the areas mentioned above before tomorrow's test"
"Today we focused on radicals, factoring, and simplifying fractions. She definitely struggled the most on understanding how to multiply and simplify radicals. However she is almost done with her online class and should finish the modules by the time she needs to take the final."
"We covered setting up solid of revolution and arc length problems and recognizing when to use the washer method versus the shell method. There were no grades to report, and the student was having the most trouble with setting up the different radii for the washer method. I left him with his notes, review, and homework to study for his upcoming exam and have no concerns about his progress at this time."
"Today the student and I reviewed her practice work #31-25. She did a good job on her practice work. She showed her work and I was able to understand how she arrived at her answer. We reviewed all the problems and discussed in detail the problems that she did not answer correctly. The student and I worked through the additional Math Assessment which completes the 4th grade assessment packet. The student had to complete # 1-5 for practice in the 5th Grade Math Assessment. The student will read at least 3 chapters in her book, "Spy Kids", and be prepared to summarize those chapters. We will review the practice work during our next session."
"I introduced the student to ellipses and hyperbolas, and the terminology accompanying these functions. We explored foci, focal distance, center, relationships between the terms in the standard forms of each type of function, including the major and minor axes, intercepts, asymptotes. We also explored graphing, and writing equations given certain components of the graph such as the foci or the center. We covered ellipses and hyperbolas centered around the origin and not centered around the origin."
"The student and I worked on his past homework, and managed to improve his scores on almost every homework set to 100%. We reviewed factoring, the quadratic formula, applications of polynomial factoring, initial value problems, and compound interest. The student did a great job at problem solving."
"The student and I finished chapter 3 in her book and began chapter 4. In chapter 3 we learned how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions. In chapter four we're learning how to deal with numbers that have exponents."
"Because our session was longer today, the student and I were able to do some reading and summarizing practices from a book she's currently working on. We also did some more multiplication practice before going into her review game."
"We spent the entire time on her review, discussing concepts while solving the exercises. The student knows what she knows well and in addition can explain it well. We discussed polynomials, logarithms, exponents, graphing."
"We continued working on the Algebra I practice worksheet and in the process reviewed some of the topics we covered from Pre-Algebra. Before our next session she's going to work on a practice test and see what topics she needs more work on so far."
