Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, we covered acids, bases, pH, pOH, [H], [OH], Ka, Kb, pKa, and pKb. His teacher gave him some practice problems with these topics and that is what we covered."
"Today, we reviewed the material from the previous session: SN1, SN2, E1, and E2 reactions. The student wanted to get ahead in her reading and lecture, so we discussed each slide of a PowerPoint presentation that revolved around alkenes, including but not limited to: IUPAC nomenclature, their formation via an E1 or E2 reactions, the role of bulky bases, and E-Z and cis-trans notation. In addition, the E2 reaction was explored in detail, particularly its mechanism with regards to stereochemistry. This required explanation of Fischer and Newman projections as well as chair structures. We practiced converting molecules back and forth between these different types of representations. Finally, we created a rough draft of a flow chart to help guide her through the thought process of analyzing a given set of reactants and establishing what the proper reaction will be. I told her she should study the material and edit the flow chart they match; I also encouraged her to practice manipulating molecules in 3D space (using her hands)."
"The student and I covered capacitors and capacitance. She picked up the material very quickly and I am very impressed by her progress. She also told me she did very well on her last exam getting a high A."
