Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We began our session with a diagnostic quiz, encompassing all subjects but reading. We moved from there to the a verbal skills lesson. We covered strategies for solving questions: eliminating, creating your own definition and "back" solving. We closed our session with work on analogies. We will cover reading comprehension next session."
"Today was our first session, so I began by having the student take a diagnostic test for the math section. This is a great way for both he and I to figure out what he needs to work on most in order to succeed! Considering that he did not know some of the concepts (mostly algebra), his test score is a sign of a really solid start. We went over the problems he got wrong. These were on subject matter from percentages to fractions to geometry. I think the areas we will focus on most in our sessions will have to be algebra and geometry. He showed quick comprehension of algebraic topics he had never seen before, such as distribution and simplification. We will work on these more next time. I also gave him a list of geometry formulas he should really commit to memory since he won't be given them on the test. This was a great first session and I look forward to the next one!"
"We finished the quantitative diagnostic test today as well as reflected on the verbal section. As far as mathematics go, the student is more than capable of scoring in the high 90th percentile. The verbal and reading sections will take a little bit of work to get to the same level as his math scores. With the student, I also thought it was important for him to verbalize what he thought the answers might be before looking at the answers themselves. This way I knew he was actively trying to solve each question. I have another session with him tomorrow and will continue to help him with reading techniques."
