Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I covered both math sections of the test together and worked practice problems that I thought would be the most beneficial to him. I also showed him/marked in the book where he can do more problems on his own to practice between sessions. He provided me with his essay in response to the prompt that I left and am grading it now. I will bring it with me Friday to our session and we can review it together as we work on another section of the SSAT."
"The student and I spent a large amount of time going over reading comprehension. We reviewed sections she'd done recently as well as one that she did a while ago. There was a significant improvement shown between the more recent sections and the old one, which is great. We then worked on math which is also improving. Finally, we discussed school interviews since she has her first interview on Friday."
"On Wednesday, I had the student do another practice essay and a practice verbal reasoning exam. She is doing much better connecting ideas and more clearly explaining what she means. I set a new word of the week for her (demote) and reviewed the meaning of last week's word (abhor). She's doing much better on our set of vocab words, so I'm going to add some more vocab from the practice test to keep working on placing words in context. We also worked on a little basic pre-algebra math. Next week I'm going to have her work on some math worksheets to help her with her division skills and to start introducing algebra vocabulary."
"Today, I proctored the student through a practice ACT English test. Despite not timing him, he still finished under the time limit; however. Since he had extra time, he should score higher if he slows down a little on the English test."
"We reviewed the some of the topics that the student found difficult in the diagnostic test. That mostly encompassed matrices and performing functions with them. We also reviewed some sequence and series information. This was extremely productive and if he remains diligently studying over the next few days he should do very well on the math subject test."
"The student and I had a challenging session. We plowed ahead on the verbal reasoning. He did well on setting up his own answer to the question, but would then eliminate answer choices that were similar in favor of answer choices that were out of scope, but alluring. He did tell me a little about the way he learned and what would work best for him. These are strategies we will work on moving forward."
