Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We did a warm up with the quantitative section of the ISEE lower level test. Then we focused mostly on reading comprehension of the same test. I have assigned the student a book to read as well as vocabulary words in order to give him more exposure to the type of reading comprehension needed for the test. I have no concerns from this session."
"We reviewed test taking strategies including how to decode the answer using prefixes and knowledge of foreign language words. The student was able to concentrate more during this session and we practiced the synonym and sentence completion portion of the test. We reviewed the essay and how to approach writing it - specifically: answering the question, making an outline, citing three examples and proofreading upon completion."
"The student and I started with a warm-up using the 5 senses to describe locations. This helps with visualization and context clues. Then we moved onto math. She had some questions about algebraic equations so we reviewed the distributive property and other equations and practiced solving. Next we studied root words of vocabulary, finding the meaning of the root word to help identify the synonym. We also used parts of speech to identify missing vocabulary. Finally, we finished with a literature passage."
"The student and I spent most of the session today covering the essay section. He excelled at idea creation and organization, but struggled somewhat with translating that model into functional sentences. We also practiced the synonym section, and his success reflected his growing vocabulary."
"We covered the student's homework on mathematics achievement, which she did outstanding on. We then worked on the quantitative section for 40 minutes, which she missed a few concepts on. We started to work on literary reading passages but only managed to get through a few questions. We will continue review next Monday."
"We were able to get to every section today, spending a good amount of time on writing, as well as finishing up the last few questions in reading and math. In preparation for our last session, please feel free to email me any specific topics or questions you would like to focus on (if anything). As of now, I'm thinking we'll finish up the last ~10 writing questions, do ~10 questions each of math and reading, and review timing and strategies. I will also email you the explanation to question 30, since we didn't get to go over that one. See you Thursday!"
