Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today the student and I covered linear combinations. He mastered the material by the end of the session and only struggled with carrying signs over and minor mistakes in arithmetic. This math doesn't come particularly naturally to the student but he is motivated and learns from his mistakes. With the proper amount of practice he will do very well in this course."
"We did one massive problem where we worked on finding the SA of a toy castle. We reviewed cones, cylinders, and boxes. Then we worked out the complications of that particular problem. The student did really well understanding the large picture which was very good. She also did well with the smaller problems."
"The student didn't have any new homework, so he elected to look forward in the chapter. The following sections covered area of triangles in different scenarios. We first covered the foundation equation for finding area. As the student was already strong in basic area, we soon moved to getting area of triangles via graphs. He can graph well, but without the squares of graph paper has some trouble getting the dimensions of a graphed triangle. We practiced counting base and height without squares. Finally we covered getting the area of triangles within parallelograms by removing negative space. By the end of our practice, he picked up the steps involved in getting area this way. After solidifying the topic in class, I feel he will be able to approach this topic without my help."
"Today, the student worked on metric conversions, based off of his weekly homework. Initially, he had a really hard time understanding the material, and because he was having difficulty, he had little interest. However, after the first worksheet, I gave him some easier examples to show him how to do them step by step, so that by the second worksheet, he was able to do them independently."
"Today, for the first hour, the student and I went over some homework from his Algebra 3 class. Together, we worked through the problems together and made sure we both got the same answers. He maintained a very positive attitude during the entire time and he easily understood the material after trying a couple of practice problems. During the next thirty minutes, we finished editing his essay. Today, we mostly went over grammar and mechanics in his essay. He seemed very relieved once we were finished with all the proofreading and editing. He is an absolute delight to work with."
"The student and I worked on fractions and recognizing relationships. We went over factoring trees and larger multiplication problems. We also worked on larger word problems and multiplying by multiples of zero (with the pattern recognition)."
