Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student's class has started covering rational expressions. This is probably one of the most difficult concepts that new algebra students are introduced too. We went through the homework. If he had questions I made up examples on my own and guided him by showing him techniques."
"Continued working on factoring polynomials. Worked on polynomials with coefficients in the first term."
"Simplifying expressions with radicals. The conjugate of a number. Solving equations with radicals. Finished homework and reviewed errors on test."
"The student and I worked on Section 5.2 of his homework. This section dealt with systems of equations again, but this time we solved them using the substitution method. He picked up this concept quickly. I want him to be a bit more careful with doing the basic arithmetic and to rely less on the calculator. I feel he will improve his automaticity in mathematics by relying on the calculator less. When I push him to use mental math or paper and pencil, I'm very impressed with his ability to come to the correct answer quickly and accurately. I asked him to print the sections 5.3 and 5.4 along with the chapter review, so we can start reviewing for a possible upcoming quiz next week."
"We covered exponents and word problems involving exponents. We also covered polynomial division. The student had an excellent attitude. We discussed strategies for breaking down the word problems, and we went over his homework."
"We started with a vocabulary quiz. The student did better this week, getting over 50% right. If he studies his words regularly, he should be able to do better. After that we did some challenge math problems that reviewed all the subjects he might encounter on his tests: arithmetic, fractions, substitution, and long division. He didn't get the questions at first, but he was able to do them by the end. Hopefully some of the techniques I taught him will help him go more quickly through the test."
