"I went over concepts of genetics and population biology with the student to prepare her for her upcoming test."
"The student and I first covered the basic concepts of genetics such as heredity, traits, genotypes, phenotypes, dominant versus recessive, and Punnett squares. He had just returned his study sheet for the test he has on Punnett squares so we went over numerous examples and created and solved word problems utilizing these squares. I left him with a practice quiz covering these materials and gave him pointers such as underlining the key words such as homozygous dominant or heterozygous so he can focus on what the question is asking. I also told him there is often plenty of time and to check his answers when he is done to make sure they make sense. He had a very good grasp of Punnett squares when we were finished and should do fine on his exam if he focuses and applies what I know he understands and was able to demonstrate to me."
"The student and I covered reactions of benzene and how benzene substituents direct the addition of other groups based on their electron withdrawing and donating capacity. He is learning how to determine which groups are electron donating and withdrawing. He had some difficulty in rationalizing bond forming relationships without using math. This is quickly improving. During this session we reviewed problems his professor provided for practice. His last test score was a 94! It was one of the two highest in his class! He is going to continue with practice problems for our next session. I am so proud of the work he is doing. He is a very bright and hard working guy. He deserves to ace this class."
