Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we moved onto the next chapter in the textbook: covalent compounds. We discussed what a covalent bond is; how to draw Lewis structures; the concept of the octet rule, and how that relates to the structures we draw; bond and molecular polarity; we briefly touched on resonance structures; discussed molecular geometries, including the VSEPR model of molecular geometry. This section was very dense in terms of conceptual content, so some of the less dense subjects were skipped so that the student could read over those and come with questions for the next time that we meet. The student said that the molecular geometries and Lewis structures made more sense after we went through them, especially after explaining VSEPR. I will test her over it next time. She was able to easily answer questions about Lewis structures and electronegativity. I intend to ask her questions about all of the material next time, to ensure that all of the conceptual material is well understood, as it will be critical for success later."
"We mostly reviewed his first test that he received back. The test covered thermodynamics, which was a tough topic for the student. He struggled with the concept between endothermic and exothermic as well as enthalpy. I went over the topics in detail as well as going over the problems that he got points taken off of. I think that he just needs more practice and to put in more time reviewing. It was nice to finally have a test back to see what exactly he was getting points taken off for. There were a lot of points taken off for minor things like significant digits and math errors that could be fixed for future tests."
"Today the student and I covered many topics on periodic trends and molecular chemistry. We were preparing her for her test on Tuesday and she seemed to have a solid understanding of the material."
