Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In this session, the student and I worked mostly on math problems. We went through some practice word problems to work on pulling out the relevant material. In addition, we practiced many math concepts involving fractions, and the student seemed to understand all of the material we covered."
"Worked on algebra with the student. I made a practice quiz for him covering slope-intercept form to help him prepare for his in-class quiz. He is mostly struggling with the concept of what the slope actually is, so we are working on clarifying his misunderstandings."
"The student has a test on Thursday, so we covered all of her class notes and went over the economics book. The teacher supplied the students with a book last week to study and go over the material. The session was very productive and the student seemed to build on a lot of the concepts that we previously covered."
"I met with the student for the first time. We discussed his strengths and weaknesses with math. We reviewed his homework regarding combining like terms to solve multi-step equations. We discussed arrangements for future tutoring dates."
"The student and I worked on his history project today. We began by going over his speech, and then went to work on his tri-fold poster. We printed out the pictures he wanted, drew a map of the eastern United States, and began going over his previously sketched bits in pen."
"Went through a math review sheet on factoring, imaginary numbers, discriminants, and simplifying equations. Went through the chemistry homework on Boyle's Law and the combined gas law (using the relationships between volume, pressure, and temperature to solve for unknown values)."
"In yesterday's session, the student and I completed another journal entry for her English class, this time having been assigned using six vocabulary words within the passage. We practiced getting in the habit of re-reading paragraphs we have written, to ensure that what we wrote is cohesive and makes sense to the reader. For her literature class, we practiced analytical thinking skills in answering questions assigned for the novel she is currently reading. We concluded our session by reviewing the next set of vocabulary words that she will be responsible for learning, which we will review in depth at today's session."
"The student and I went over a list of words that she had compiled from her reading and discussed their definitions, uses, and contexts in preparation for the Verbal section of the GRE. We then worked on some Quantitative Comparison questions, but started out each of the problems with a 15-second period of "reflection" in which the student was not allowed to "start" the problem but could only think about how she was going to solve it. This method had good results!"
"We covered 15 math problems, 10 "numbers and equations" problems and 5 other random problems. Allie is working the most with remembering the rules and tricks from basic algebra-- including carrying negatives through parentheses, how to work with exponents in equations, how to solve systems of equations, and recognizing when to substitute one expression into another. I saw real improvement on these algebra skills from last time, and she is doing really well on many of the other math question types! Of the 15 questions we did, at least 7 seemed to be really easy for her."
"We had the last section before the student had her test. Her selection process for picking answers has gotten much better. In the last 1/3 of the session we went over remaining questions that she had with the math section and I gave her some advice for going into tomorrow."
"When we began the session, the student was quite worried about her performance on the math diagnostic. However, as we worked, she became quite at ease and saw the promise of much improvement (which I too saw). She has good latent skills that just need "dusting off." However, as regards verbal problems, she needs to do significant work on vocabulary which we will be making sure is addressed in various ways. We worked through the chapters on arithmetic, algebra, and circles in the prep book. I assigned subsets from these chapters. We also worked through sentence completion questions. I assigned 40 of these questions."
"The session went great overall. We worked on reading comprehension and went over general strategies while doing so. We agreed to meet for only one hour at a time, which works best for both of us. He is also interested in math tutoring."
