Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I had a great session! I think she will do great on her test tomorrow. We studied regular "ar" and "ir/er" verbs in the preterite tense. She did a great job and only misplaced an accent once or twice. We then moved on to more challenging concepts of irregular verbs (ser, ir, estar, querer, etc.) We practiced conjugating them and then put the different words in different sentences. Finally, we listened to some Spanish music and talked about the song lyrics and what she thought the words meant."
"During our session, I asked her if there was anything specific she wanted to cover, but instead we just did an overall review on the first chapter which covered basic theory and the philosophy of linguistics. We also began to touch on subjects in the second chapter that she is to be tested on this Thursday. The student showed an overall positive attitude towards the material. I ensured her that with discipline and repetition, these concepts will reveal themselves to be easier and easier."
"This class the pairs continued to work on the scripts that they began the prior class. Because a few new workers were there and some from the previous class were not, we had to do a bit of group rearrangement. Most of this class, the guys spent time working in pairs or in groups continuing to write scripts or going over concepts and vocabulary we had learned in prior classes (I really let it be up to them what they felt they needed to work on). For about an hour I walked around to each group to see how they were doing. I think this class was essential for them to start thinking about how to use specific terminology and grammar on their own, without me talking in front of the class. There were definitely still some parts where they seemed overwhelmed when they wanted to learn a new concept, but I really was very proud of them and the work they did today. They seemed much more focused than prior days and eager to learn. After the groups had finished their skits and/ or going over concepts, each group presented to the rest of the class. I was glad to see the guys start practicing speaking. This is something I will try to incorporate more often."
