"We went over the student's PEMDAS worksheets (Order of operations) in detail, did some more practice work on setting up math problems, discussed how to translate word problems into equations, discussed the "Bridges of Konigsberg" math problem and how to solve it, and discussed some math strategy, such as when to select "It cannot be determined from the information given" if that's one of the choices."
"The student reported that he struggled with some of the math word problems he was assigned to work on for homework, so we started this session going over those. He is having some difficulty in following the strategies we discussed, so I re-emphasized the importance of using RAAW (Read the Question: Ask yourself what is being asked of you; Ask yourself what you know to solve the problem; Work the math involved), and showed that using the process helps one be more confident in answering such questions. Next, he did some practice problems from the prep book, and he showed himself that using the strategy makes good sense. Next, we spoke about his word arithmetic flash cards and discussed how they should be used in conjunction with the prefix and suffix lists in the book to figure out the meanings of unfamiliar words. He will practice this throughout the week. Finally, we did some reading comprehension practice, and he did very well on these questions, as he used the read questions first and skim/scan strategies we talked about previously. He will do so on the three homework passages as well for review next time."
"We focused on reading comprehension for the first half. Overall, the student is making improvements in reading comp. Because she does have plenty of time until her test, I feel that she will be able to get her reading comp score up significantly. We then worked on charts and graphs, which she has had some trouble with. She is getting better."
"At today's session, we continued to work on the verbal and reading sections, going through each of the different question types and talking about how best to approach them. We also spent time going over a list of word roots, prefixes, and suffixes that I put together before class."
"We focused mainly on Critical Reading during this session. First we went over a challenging passage that was not only difficult to read, but also had difficult questions. We went over the specific ways to approach a passage - reading/skimming questions first, underlining parts in the passage that will be asked about, reading the passage carefully for comprehension, and finally answering the critical reading questions. I also helped him understand and contextualize some of the words he did not understand."
"Today the student and I focused on arithmetic problems. We started the session with a quick review of bridges and synonyms. Then, we moved into 15 minutes of vocabulary where she reviewed words on flashcards and we discussed any words she was having trouble with. After the vocabulary, we moved in to arithmetic problems where we discussed tricks to quick problem solving. She did 21 practice problems and we reviewed the answers."
"Completed arithmetic review for SSAT Math, including some unfamiliar rules of square roots and factors."
"The student and I covered the material for the reading section of the test today. We worked on skills to complete the section quickly, yet accurately, and talked about the proper time to guess and when to leave questions blank. We then discussed his essay prompt and spoke about some good essay writing skills that will also be important for writing his entrance essays to his high schools. I taught him about the importance of topic/thesis sentences and the overall structure of the essay. We also discussed the proper time frame for writing the essay on the day of the test. He was going to be administered a full SSAT test Saturday and we will discuss it, as well as the vocabulary section, if there is time on Monday."
"We worked through another practice test. He is getting better with taking his time on the math questions."
"We worked on essay prompts, reading passages, and vocabulary. We also talked about root stems of words in order to further enhance her vocabulary."
"SSAT: format, prep, strategies, fundamental concepts to know-math, creating vocab flash cards. 8 students."
"Good session. The student and I worked on synonyms, reading comprehension, and math. In addition, I coached him on his admission essay for the school he wants to go to."
