"The student and I took notes for chapter 15 on fossil fuels. She got a B+ on her last test. Good job!"
"Today we went over ionic compounds, including how ions are formed, naming of ionic compounds, and reactions of ionic compounds. We thus reviewed the concept of electron configuration in order to discuss why certain atoms form the ions they do; discussed ionic bonding; briefly touched on covalent bonding in order to discuss polyatomic ions; reviewed electronegativity to apply it to the water molecule and discuss its dipole, which is the reason ions are solvated in water; net ionic equations; and the conceptual basis behind reactions (a collision between two molecules), as well as many other topics. The student has learned this material in her AP class before, but largely without the concepts explained to her. Once these concepts were explained, she was very interested in the material and found it all to be very interesting. She truly enjoys learning about conceptual chemistry, so I will continue to implement this into our sessions. She has been reviewing all of the material that we've covered on her own, and feels comfortable with the material up to now."
"This meeting was the first meeting. All of our meetings will cover chemistry, geometry, and organizational skills. We covered the limiting reactant and bomb calorimetry problems to begin in the chemistry section. We looked at the whole process, from setting up and balancing the equation, to working with the amounts given to determine the amount of heat produced and added in the change to the surrounding water temperature. The student showed he has the means to perform very well and sailed smoothly through these problems. We switched to geometry where he is looking at volumes and areas of shapes with a focus on missing triangle lengths. We worked on determining the areas of different triangles by working with given information. He showed high level problem solving. Overall, he performed well in it. For time organization, we went through the ways he keeps track of things now and I advised him of additional ways to keep track of homework assignments. We decided he would work on writing it right in his notes so that when he looks at his notes he would also see his homework."
