Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We focused on reading today because she still feels like it is her weak point. We did a few individually timed passages so she could get a better idea of the pace of working through the tests. She did okay with those passages, but after we worked through a few together, she did more practice and greatly improved."
"We went over a practice Science section together, working through the problems and getting a feel for them. I gave the student some practice passages to go through before our next session. Overall, she is very intelligent and catches on relatively quickly. We just have to work on getting her to answer questions a bit faster."
"Focused primarily on the Reading section of the ACT. The content does not seem to be an issue for the student. It may be that he needs to practice timing himself and working on his pacing. By the next session, he should have another practice test completed."
"We worked on the student's college application essay and then on the English portion of the ACT. The student has a great topic for her essay, but she still needs to do a lot of revising. The ACT is coming along well--the student is usually accurate. Now we have to work on speed and focus."
"Adjusted plans for future sessions around scheduling conflicts. Per the student's requests, worked on English sections passage by passage and outlining Writing (essay) in response to prompts. Debriefed about each problem the student had difficulty on in English section and reviewed strategies while outlining Writing essays. He is now on track to score at least 30 in the English section, showing substantial improvement over the last month."
"Today the student and I went over the work he has done over the past week in Reading, Science, and a little Math. In Reading we are continuing to make adjustments in order to find the right balance between timing and accuracy. In Science he applied the strategy I gave him very well and next week we will continue to look at this section. Next week I asked him to work on English, Reading, and a little Math or Reading if he has extra time."
"The student and I had another successful session today. She is progressing very well! She did almost perfectly on the homework, so we only needed to spend a few minutes going over it. We then moved on to the Critical Reading, where she got a perfect sweep of correct answers! We then checked some issues in the English section to wrap up. I'm very happy with the students work and am looking for ward to seeing her again next week."
"We covered ACT Math #4. The students plans to finish the questions we didn't go over before our next session so we can review next Wed. He also has other practice tests he will go over so we can review that during our next session too. The student seems to be doing really well with Math, so now we will start to focus on timings in that section as well."
"Today was my first session with the student and we began to talk a bit about the ACT. First, we discussed her general standardized test experience, strengths, and weaknesses. She mentioned that the reading portion is where she feels she struggles with. We then began to discuss the general format of the test and how that may effect her test taking strategies. Then we went through part of the reading strategies and "typical" questions. Finally, we ended by doing half of the math section from the first practice exam. The student did exceptionally well and I can tell that section will be one of her strengths on this exam. I encouraged her to do 30min of practice a day, be it reading her book or doing mini-mock exams."
"The student and I went further on Math problems, demonstrating how the same concepts are tested each time and what tricks to use to solve those types of problems. We also discussed the writing section and how to structure an argumentative type essay, and went over the scoring protocol of example essays so he knows what they are looking for. For next week he is going to finish the math section and a science section while also again hitting his English flash cards. He will then take a full practice test later that weekend."
"We went over a complete math test, focusing on speed. The student has no issues with the arithmetic or the concepts being tested on the math portion of the ACT. We worked on how to attack graphing problems and filling in the gaps of things that he used to know when it comes to math. He remembered everything we covered last time. We also spent some time on the English section. In this section, we covered more of the concrete types of problems he will face. Again, he was able to recall previous difficult problems and apply that knowledge to this test. We discussed meeting again in two weeks. In the meantime (possibly next Sunday) he should complete one entire practice ACT as if he were sitting for it."
"We did 3 passages from English, 2 from Reading, and 2 from Science from the first practice test in the book. Homework: Read Chapter 2 in the book about the test and do one Math passage if possible."
