Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student is working on the review session of exponential and logarithmic functions. Today we went over the properties of logarithmic functions, product, quotient, power rules and change of base formula. After several practices, she got familiar with the properties and ready for the next part."
"The student and I started off the session with going over his last quiz on maximum and minimums. This quiz he initially got a 75% on, but he will be getting extra credit for the corrections. He struggled with the difference between absolute, relative, and local extrema. The key was to define these concepts and fully understand how to apply the knowledge. We went over optimization today in our session as well. The problems we went over were tricky but we worked through them. His tests should go well as long as he goes over these concepts one more time. Optimization takes practice."
"We reviewed calculus concepts in preparation for the student's first test, focusing on limits. Understanding what it means to "approach infinity" was the biggest challenge, but by the end, he began to understand how we use the concept to see end behavior of functions. We also looked at some applied math concepts, in both his programming and architecture courses. The programming involved arithmetic sequences and explicit formulas. In the architecture, we discussed how mathematical construction of circles is achieved from triangles and line segments."
"Today we covered a lot of concepts concerning differentiation including the power rule, product rule, quotient rule, chain rule, implicit differentiation, and marginal analysis. The student struggled not so much with the fundamentals of the concepts, but more so with the organization of the problems. When things start to get too complex, the expressions tend to get lost for her and she loses the methodical approach (particularly in longer chain rule problems). We will continue to work on that. Overall, her algebra was good and she did not have a serious problem with the fundamental understanding of derivatives. For a first session, she had a lot to take in and digest, but she handled it very well."
"We worked on chemistry in this session. We worked on identifying the element based on atomic number and mass number. We also looked at naming an element and identifying its number of protons, neutrons and electrons. We looked at general naming of compounds. We also covered calculations involving finding a balanced reaction equation. We then focused on frequency/ wavelength equations and how they apply to kinetic energy of electrons. Overall we covered a lot in this session and we will continue tomorrow afternoon."
"Today, the student and I went over more related rates problems. She was beginning to feel pretty confident with these by the end, so she should be good to complete the mastery test on her own before our next session. We'll meet again on Thursday at our new time!"
