I believe that the key to learning is not memorization of material but rather a solid understanding of governing principles. Anyone can memorize a formula, but that doesn't mean he understands the material. By understanding the concepts of chemistry (or biology, or physics, or geometry etc.) a student is able to think his way through a problem and he doesn't have to worry about forgetting when to use what formula.
