Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, the student and I focused on Chemistry because he has a quiz in that class this coming Monday. We worked on a lot of stoichiometry, the specific material that he is struggling with currently. Also, he had some flashcards from last semester that I worked on with him for part of the session. Although the formulas on the flash cards are something he learned in class a while ago, he seems to be struggling with some of the new material because he doesn't have the previous material memorized. I expect the combination of working new examples and memorizing old problematic material will allow him to go into his quiz on Monday well-prepared."
"Today, I tutored two students together. First, we went through the "fog-lifter" technique on the gigantic passage. Then, we discussed parallel line/transversals and assorted special right triangles. We discussed some Geometry basics. Then, we talked about sentence-completion questions. Finally, we practiced the "fog-lifter" technique on some short passages."
"The student and I worked on math and reading. We covered math for about 45 minutes and reading for 15 minutes. For math, he seems to understand addition and subtraction, but needs work with multiplication and division. He needs to memorize his times tables in the 8's and 9's and he needs to begin understanding the connection between multiplication and its inverses in division. Difficulty multiplying by two digit numbers. Also needs to work on memorizing his division tables. I suggested to his father to make flash cards. For reading, he was very quick and remembered details very well. Could work on understanding the main point of a passage without being prompted."
"Went through some reading passages that student had been assigned; passages were very heavy with grammar, especially subjunctive grammar (purpose/result/fearing clauses, indirect commands and questions, cum clauses, etc.) so, particular attention was paid to the recognition and translation of these constructions."
"Lewis dots. Trends periodic table, molecular geometry vs. Electron domain geometry. Hybridization. VSEPR. Connecting all the concepts to solve problems. Left some sheets to help her with a quiz on the above said material."
"Today the student completed the ArrayList shopping cart lab. This assignment was pretty involved and required some serious debugging. We have discussed meeting again this weekend so that we can catch him up completely on another session."
